Key Steps to Finding Your Lost Cat

The following are some of the key steps to finding your lost cat: -
  1. Put a dish of your cat’s food outside your front and back door, as well as a favorite blanket or toy near the entrance to the house so they can follow the scent home.

  2. Search immediately – most animals do not stray far during the first hours of getting lost. Call your cat’s name often and loudly. Ask people on the street if they have seen your cat. Give them your number in case they do. Most cats become very frightened, and will hide. Actively search your property and the surrounding area – don’t assume they will come to you immediately. Check any sheds, cars, garages, out-buildings, wardrobes, cupboards or anywhere that your cat could have got into.

  3. Register your cat as missing for FREE on PetsForSale.co.nz, this free notice will be on the website for one month and can be renewed for free. Add your lost cat listing now.

  4. Call local Councils and SPCAs to register your cat as missing and ask them if there are any animals that have been found that match your cat’s description.

  5. Make flyers with “LOST CAT” in big bold letters so it can be read by someone driving by a telephone pole. Include a brief description, a picture if you have one, and your phone number. Consider offering a reward. Ask to be called even if people just see your pet. Post the flyers in the surrounding area, at local veterinary clinics, pet stores (and anyplace else that will let you), local dairies etc. For outdoor flyers, you can enclose them in plastic sheet protectors.

  6. If you know where your pet is, but they will not come to you, you can use live traps that you can rent to catch your cat, approximately $35. Seek assistance from your local Animal Shelter.
Follow the above steps and you will have a much better chance at locating your cat. However, make sure you don’t give up hope, keep checking the Animal Shelters and looking. Sometimes it takes a while. PetsForSale.co.nz has reunited cats with owners after months since they originally went missing.
